at first he doesn’t understand. she just hands him this letter, and his eyes are scanning over it. it’s obviously from the doctor, the baby doctor, and there are a lot of big words, and there’s her name at the top.
‘i got it yesterday at my appointment.’ she says quietly.
‘what does it mean?’ he asks, looking up at her. she’s not looking at him, which worries him, because she never looks at him when something’s wrong. her eyes are focused forward, but he knows she’s not really watching the cheerios. her jaw is set and he knows that means she’s on the verge of tears, which only worries him more.
‘quinn?’ he prompts, but then she’s shaking her head and standing up quickly, walking away from him as fast as she can in the bleachers, and he can tell that she’s started to cry. he gets up to follow her and the letter falls from his lap. he picks it up again, and one word jumps out at him.
miscarriage.
